What to expect

Drink Beer. Save Turtles. is Turtle Survival Alliance's fundraising program with breweries and taprooms across the country. This one is ours. We'll be at Afterglow with a few of our turtle ambassadors, animals that live in our permanent care because they can't survive in the wild. Each one has a story about why wild turtles need to stay wild.

  • Meet our ambassadors and ask us anything about turtle rescue, rehabilitation, and what to do if you find a turtle in trouble.
  • Pick up Drink Beer. Save Turtles. merch from Turtle Survival Alliance.
  • Round up for turtles all month. Throughout November, Afterglow is running a round-up campaign, and all round-up proceeds go to Turtle Survival Alliance.
  • Bring the whole family. The event is family-friendly, with non-alcoholic options at the bar, a food truck on site, and the option to order in from a nearby restaurant.
  • Dress for the weather. We'll be set up outside under a tent with heaters, so come as you are and we'll keep things warm.

Who Turtle Survival Alliance is

Turtle Survival Alliance formed in 2001 in response to the Asian Turtle Crisis, when demand for food, pets, and traditional medicine was emptying turtle populations across Asia. Their goal is zero turtle extinctions this century, which is ambitious when more than half of the world's 360 species of turtles and tortoises are threatened with extinction.

Today they operate or support projects in 30 countries. That includes field conservation with local communities, breeding programs for species that can't yet survive in the wild, the Turtle Survival Center in South Carolina, and rescue work for turtles seized from wildlife traffickers. When thousands of tortoises turn up in a poaching bust, Turtle Survival Alliance is often the organization that steps in to care for them.

Why we partner with them

We work locally. Most of our patients are eastern box turtles, diamondback terrapins, and snapping turtles from right here in Hampton Roads. Turtle Survival Alliance works globally, on many of the most endangered turtles on the planet. The threats are the same at both scales: habitat loss, roads, and a trafficking trade that doesn't care whether a turtle came from Madagascar or a backyard in Virginia.

Turtle Survival Alliance is also where the turtle conservation community comes together. In 2025, we presented turtle-ai, our behavioral monitoring system for rehab, at their 23rd Annual Symposium. Small organizations like ours learn a lot from that network, and events like this one let us give something back.

All brewery fundraising for this event goes to Turtle Survival Alliance. If you'd also like to support local turtle rehabilitation, stop by our table or visit our donate page.
